This is a 20th century reproduction of a traditional tribal object known as an Akua’ba.
The Akua’ba figure (usually referred to as a “doll”) is probably the most recognizable of traditional African sculptures. These small figures were used by women of the Asante people of Ghana who carried them as they would a baby to promote their fertility and to ensure the beauty and health of their offspring.
