Sakebukuro are used in the sake making process in Japan for filtering rice water. The cloth is dyed using persimmon juice (kakishibu), which acts as a preservative and germ killing agent; the dye also strengthens the cloth, and prevents insect infestation during storage.
In addition to the variegated hues of material, indicating wear and frequent re-application of the dye, the stitching, patching and repairs on these two indicate long use.
