Li/Nuoso artist (China)
With its prominent horn and flaring cantle, this intricately decorated saddle shows how effectively a utilitarian object becomes a piece of sculpture. Drawing on the customary patterns and colors of the Li people, a palette of red and yellow on a black background has been worked into a complex pattern of circles, rectangles, lines and dots with floral and curvilinear patterns. Segments of incised bone decorate the crupper.
