Oromo artist (Ethiopia)
This type of headrest was carved with the intent to keep a sleeper’s coiffure off the ground. Not only can one spend a lot of time to create an elaborate and intricate hairstyle, but they would wish to preserve it as it will represent identifying markers of rank, social status, or age for example.
This headrest demonstrates the use of a lathe on the column and conical base.
