Kullu Valley artist (Northern India)
Masks such as this are used during the Fagli festival which involves a procession of dancers, musicians and devotees in traditional costumes. They visit the villages of the valley to announce the end of the cold winter and deliver the blessings of the Gods. The Hindu belief, that the deities sleep and rest in the winter, means the people are in constant danger of active evil forces. During Fagli, the Gods are roused from their celestial sleep and everybody rejoices in their awakening.
