Roy Simmons (American)
In an arrangement somewhat reminiscent of Joseph Cornell’s work, a weathered box serves as a stage for a shrine object from the Dogon people of Mali and a fragment of an African rattle.
In addition to being an artist, Simmons served as the coach of the Syracuse University men’s lacrosse team from 1971 to 1998. Simmons’ teams won the National Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Lacrosse Championship six times, and appeared in the national semifinals during 16 consecutive seasons.
