A 20th century reproduction of the sort of heavily encrusted fetishes in animal form used by the Dogon people of Mali.
Many African carvers have turned to reproducing tribal pieces for sale to outsiders, principally the Western art market. These objects are artificially aged or have sacrificial material added to make them appear to have been used (in much the same way that our fashion industry adds wear and tear to new jeans and hoodies).
