Many African carvers have turned to reproducing tribal pieces for sale to outsiders, principally the Western art market.
This elegant piece was carved in the style of a female portrait mask (Kpan) from the Baule people of Cote d’Ivoire. Customary scarification patterns adorn the cheeks and forehead; the elegant hairstyle indicates status and the downcast eyes, modesty. The “beard” beneath the chin is simply a decorative element.
Shark’s teeth were added when the wood began to split.
